Swisscontact South Asia Regional Office (SARO)
Swisscontact South Asia Regional Office (SARO) is located in Bangladesh. A part of Swisscontact, the Swiss Foundation for Technical Cooperation, SARO has the mandate to develop and maintain Swisscontact’s portfolio of development projects in South Asia.Swisscontact is headquartered in Zurich and was founded in 1959 by leading figures from the Swiss private sector and Swiss universities.
Swisscontact started operating in South Asia in 1979 when it partnered with Bangladesh Industrial Technical Assistance Centre (BITAC). Soon it started work in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the 1980s and Nepal from 1990. Swisscontact's largest portfolio of projects in the region is in Bangladesh. Its most successful Senior Expert Corps (SEC) program is in Nepal where it is also supporting the Training Institute for Technical Instruction (TITI), a state-of-the-art technical and vocational education training institute. It also has projects focusing on local economic development in Sri Lanka.
Swisscontact SARO aims to further deepen its work in South Asia (particularly Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka) with the aim to contribute to sustainable economic development. It continues to maintain a valuable network of private businesses, economic representatives, advisors, ministries and organisations to connect economic interests with the wider development needs.
